Guest Biographies
Mr Martin Torres :Martin Torres is the Deputy Governor for Education in the Office of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. Martin served as Deputy Policy Director for the governor’s first campaign for office and then in the administration as a Senior Policy Advisor and later First Assistant Deputy Governor for Education. He oversees four state agencies (ISBE, IBHE, ICCB, and ISAC), chairs the P-20 Council and the Illinois Early Learning Council, and leads the appointment process for all education-related state boards and commissions. Prior to his work in state government, Martin served as associate director of the Latino Policy Forum, where he guided the organization’s legislative and administrative advocacy with a focus on education, immigrant integration, and fiscal policy. He also spent several years in Washington DC working at the Alliance for Excellent Education and the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. Martin has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy.
Dr. Michael Hancock '89 :Dr. Michael Hancock is an IMSA Charter Class Alumnus (Class of 1989) and a former 1501 resident. He has taught English at IMSA since Fall 2001. His graduating class just celebrated their 35-year reunion last month. After graduating from IMSA, Michael earned degrees from the University of Notre Dame (BA, English, 1993), Kansas State University (MA, English, 1995), and the University of Kansas (Ph.D., English, 2006). At IMSA, he teaches Literary Explorations I, II, and III and electives in creative writing, graphic novels, and satire. When he’s not teaching or grading, Michael enjoys building with LEGO™ and collecting sixth-scale figures and statues. Michael helped to organize the IMSA Council, IMSA’s union of educators, which he has proudly served as president since 2020. Michael is also a vice-president of AFT/IFT Local 604, encompassing 85 autonomous councils and over 10,000 members.
