Abstract

Currently, food waste in America is a chronic issue. Families across the country waste $1500 throwing out food a year, wasting massive amounts of resources in the process. Food waste makes up a quarter of our water supply, increasing the growing issue of resource consumption in the nation. By decreasing food waste, we can conserve resources and protect the environment. Although this is a widespread issue, we can take steps at IMSA to solve this problem. Every day, students waste food they don’t want to eat, and we believe that fixing this could reduce the food waste problem at IMSA. We plan to address this by adding compost bins to Sodexo and the residential halls and informing people. In order to implement compost bins, we will have to consider certain drawbacks. We plan to talk to school officials to inquire about challenges they faced when they attempted to implement composting.
