Abstract

Our main goal is to reduce the wage gap by educating future workers about what fair pay is and how to advocate for themselves to achieve it. The UN Sustainable Development Goal we have chosen for the basis of this project is Goal 5, to reach gender equality and empower all women and girls. However, we are focusing more on equality for all genders, including non-cisgender identities. We realized that a lot of IMSA students end up in STEM careers, but there is a wage gap that exists within the field between various gender identities. We believe the main means of combating the wage gap would be knowledge, specifically in an academic environment. Education can bring change. By bringing an opportunity to learn about the wage gap, the awareness could possibly dwindle and even erase it. We aim to create an intersession at IMSA to spread awareness about this issue, help students feel prepared to enter the workforce, and help break the stigma around advocacy in the workplace to ensure their economic and career success. In addition, we plan to reach out to current teachers and alum to make a curriculum and create a guide of resources for students who are not able to attend the intersession. While creating this curriculum, we plan to do general research on the wage gap and poll students on their perceived financial literacy. As well as creating and publishing a guide that covers information about this topic and how workers can advocate for themselves for students who are not able to attend. By attending our intersession and/or referring to our guide, we hope that future workers will be empowered to reduce the wage gap by advocating for themselves.
