Abstract

Desertification is the process by which vegetation in drylands, arid and semi-arid lands, such as grasslands or shrublands, decreases and eventually disappears. Land degradation across the globe affects almost 2 billion hectares of land. Furthermore, each year, 24 billion tons of perfectly fertile soil are lost due to erosion. This causes a loss of biodiversity by worsening the living conditions of many species as well as the loss of farmland having a profound effect on agriculture in areas of desertification. Current solutions include water saving and planting trees, yet this is variable with fresh water being valuable and variable and trees taking a long time to have an effect. Another is stone lines, yet this is labor intensive. Thus, a practical solution needed to be made. With our product ReGreenify we will make use of eco-friendly soil stabilizers and organic materials to aid in water retention and provide nutrients. We will use xanthan gum, compost, minerals such as calcium carbonate and gypsum, and stabilizers such as polyacrylamide. These ingredients will help by improving soil structure, increasing soil porosity, and reducing soil erosion. This can lead to improved water infiltration and retention, which can help support plant growth and reduce the risk of desertification. These ingredients will be put into powder form and can be mixed with water and applied to the soil. Additionally, some of our ingredients can help sequester carbon in the soil, which can help mitigate climate change. To gain revenue we plan to target farmers in areas such as western North America and West Africa where desertification is common as well as partner with organizations to help distribute and gain knowledge of how to implement it into communities. Join us in our pursuit to end desertification with ReGreenify.
