Session C-3: Using Sordaria as a Model for Crossing Over as an Extension of AP Biology Lab 3
Description
The fungus, Sordaria, is a common laboratory model used to demonstrate meiosis and crossing over. It is used in the AP Biology curriculum during investigation #7. While the use of Sordaria in that lab is interesting, it is only used to show simple crossing over. In this session, we will discuss and demonstrate how Sordaria can be used as an extension lab activity to help students further explore and understand the mechanics of crossing over, more complex genetic mapping and linkage. We will also provide ideas for lab reports and other extension activities based on the Sordaria lab.
