Sensationalism and its Effect on News Source Reliability

Ashley Homecgoy, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy

Abstract

Yellow journalism, or sensationalism, is a big obstacle in achieving a truthful and ethical news climate. In order to combat this problem, we must first become aware of the bias and sensationalism occurring in sources that we consider to be trusted. The questions I am researching into are: How do different factors factor into the likelihood that a newspaper will write biased news articles? Does political affiliation, and level of affiliation correlate to sensationalism?

I have compiled the twenty most popular news sources in North America. Looking at revenue, number of clickbait articles, and political bias, I will be discerning how those factors have affected that news source’s popularity. To achieve this, I will be using R and a linear regression model to compare all of these factors. As of current. I have not found any major findings, as my project is incomplete, but I will continue to research and analyze.
