The Relationship Between the Gut Microbiota and Common Cancers

Madeleine Chow '20, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy

Description

Studies focused on characterizing the gut microbiome and understanding its relationship to different diseases and conditions has increased significantly within the past few years. With consistent data showing that the gut microbiome can have an influence on diseases and their treatment, researchers have applied these studies towards cancer in hopes of being closer to creating a more effective treatment or a cure. In this review, we will discuss studies that have found a relationship between the gut microbiome and cancer, specifically, lung, breast, colon, and pancreatic. This review is an analysis of the bacteria mentioned in cancer and gut microbiome focused research papers to find any commonalities between these cancers in an attempt to help focus future research on this topic.
