Abstract

There are multiple problems with the current state of water quality in the United States regarding the lack of compliance to regulations passed into order by the Clean Water Act and enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency. There is a significant amount of water pollution because of both organic and inorganic pollutants, such as nutrients and heavy metals. To address this problem, we propose a four point plan to be submitted to the federal congress. We plan to push for the elimination of nuclear waste disposal near bodies of water, specifically from plants that are dormant. Additionally, we want to execute the use of debris and oil booms to clean up plastic and other pollution from the ocean. Then, we will enact regulations on plastic production and consumption and the use of fertilizer/pesticide/herbicide in order to minimize the effects of toxins away on water sources. Finally, we will enforce existing policies including the Clean Water Act by establishing more effective punishments for the breaking of such laws, as well as incentives for compliance. For example, we might offer a small tax break for companies that comply with the rules.
