Abstract

Natural Disasters are terrible, traumatic events that cause lasting damage both physically and humanely. However, natural disasters are not preventable, so it is perhaps more important how the community and the government responds to these disasters. Property damage (and the property values of homes affected by natural disasters) are often substantially affected by natural disasters, and often these effects are long-term. In turn, fluctuating property values can have a huge effect on the surrounding community, affecting businesses, neighborhood value, and causing lower qualities of life. As a result, we sought to determine: what factors caused by natural disasters affect property values and affect their growth and sustainability? What have the government’s initiatives been to help respond to and assist in the damage caused by natural disasters and have they succeeded? How can these efforts improve? As a result of this investigation, we hope to determine how the government and the community can best respond to the effects on property and limit the economic and humanitarian consequences of natural disasters.
