Abstract

Among the most critical issues of modern society with some of the most far-reaching consequences is disease control in all aspects of it, whether passive in the form of obesity and general health to pandemics and their impact on human life. UNSDG 3 relates the most directly with health concerns as it reads, "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages." With the current worldwide concerns of COVID-19, many questions have risen to prominence about how the situation escalated so drastically and if we could have prevented it in the first place. To respond to this question the most effectively, it is important to take a look at the past for diseases with similar patterns of growth and mortality, namely the Bubonic Plague, more colloquially known as the Black Death, for its similarity to the current threat of the coronavirus in terms of mortality and spread, and Ebola, to see what people could have learned from a near catastrophe that was resolved rather quickly, especially in relation to COVID-19. In society, pandemics understandably receive greater care and attention, however, another major global issue that often gets overlooked is obesity which is in the top 5 most common reasons for death and is costing the United States billions in dollars. The factors that contribute to obesity include an individual’s lifestyle choices which involve daily nutrition and physical activity. “A Look at Global Obesity” will take a deeper look at what obesity is and examine if obesity rates are correlated to such lifestyle factors.
