Gender Equality on Transportation
Abstract
Public Transportation is supposed to be a place where people are able to get from one place to another safely and somewhat comfortably. However, many people around the world either feel uncomfortable in public transportation or have unfortunately experienced some form of harassment. Without the resources available to prevent harassment, people all over the world constantly have to go out of their way to avoid a place that is meant for everyone to be able to access. These resources can include making these different types of harassment easier to report, such as adding buttons inside buses or trains when an issue arises. Initiatives such as pink seats for pregnant women or simply training staff on public transport on how to handle issues of sexual assault or violence need to be implemented to support gender equality. To ensure gender equality on public transport, we propose an initiative to involve people of numerous gender identities in the process of designing transport to maximize comfort for all. In addition to this, we provide a policy proposal and have found legislators to contact about these plans. Our goal is to educate and inform others about gender inequalities involving public transport as well as providing policy ideas and initiatives to alleviate this concern.
