Abstract
In November of 2019, CNN found that in the preceding 46 weeks of school, there was an average of 1 school shooting every week (Wolfe, 2019). School shootings are an extremely prevalent issue that affects the entire education system. According to the CDC WISQARS System, approximately 8 children are shot and killed as a result of gun violence every single day (CDC, 2019). This issue causes a huge impact on the mental health of students every day. This is why it is of utmost importance to find the causes and solutions to gun violence within our schools. In a survey done by Alfred University, it was found that 87% of respondents to the survey wanted to get back at the people who had hurt them. Furthermore, it was found that 86% of respondents were being bullied which would be a reason for their actions. 61% of respondents expressed that they experienced trauma at some point which was also a motivating factor in their decision Alfred University, 2019). Clearly, all of this research points to the fact that bullying and trauma are some of the motivating factors that affect school shooters when they are planning their actions. However, there are many solutions to alleviate these factors that can be implemented into education systems which provide a vast benefit to the schools. Organizations like Crisis Prevention have found that some of the most effective ways to reduce bullying specifically in schools are to reward positive behavior, clearly define the difference between bullying and other forms of teasing, and even engage with parents more in order to understand the students on a deeper level (Hellwig, 2012). All of these solutions can be easily implemented in order to heavily increase the well-being and safety of future generations.
