Abstract
Self-driving cars, known as autonomous vehicles, are set to dominate the future transportation market. With a current market value of 54 billion dollars along with the projection to grow to 550 billion by 2026, many experts predict it as the future of our transportation. Utilizing its various sensors such as the camera, radar, and lidar, autonomous vehicles do not need the presence of human attention while driving. This concept of “self-driving”, however, can greatly benefit or harm society. While removing human error and 24/7 vehicles would be much more profitable for companies, this would lead to mass unemployment for truck and taxi drivers. Moreover, there have been multiple reported deaths due to trial autonomous vehicles not being able to detect jaywalking humans. However, when implemented correctly, autonomous driving can save tens of thousands of lives each year. Autonomous vehicles also have been projected to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, making the roads safer and environmental benefits.
