Abstract

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal that our group has chosen is #6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Water is vital to human survival. Unfortunately, throughout certain areas of the world, water sources have been contaminated making it difficult for humans to consume. This has occurred in the US, where a major substance that has been polluting the water is radium. A specific example of this water contamination is in Brady, Texas in which its citizens have experienced poor water quality as a result of bad treatment. We tackled this problem by creating a cheap and efficient water filter that will separate the radium from the clean water using nothing but lime softening powder. This filter will first add lime powder to clean water, creating a lime water mixture. Then the filter will automatically combine the mixture with the contaminated water, gathering the radium from the clean water into a sludge. Finally, the filter will isolate the clean water into the user's drinking instrument leaving the sludge behind. The sludge can easily be cleaned off, letting the user reuse the filter many times over. Our product introduces a simple and cheap household filter that the average American family can use!
