Abstract
While POC have faced racism and discrimination in America for generations, the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted some of the social injustices Black people have faced in the U.S.A., with social media being a major platform. Social apps like TikTok and Instagram can easily spread news and awareness, but also misinformation and stereotypes. This directly brings disadvantages to social movements like the BLM movements because of the stigma created through the stereotypes, that were created from misleading information on these platforms. Social media also tends to push counter movements against movements such as that of the BLM movement, like All Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter. These kinds of movements can create dangerous setbacks for social and human rights movements, therefore creating an environment for people to learn the facts and not misinformation is crucial. Our goal to decrease the amount of misinformation being spread is to counterattack with a more creative method of using social media as a platform for activism. That way the Black Lives Matter movement can be uplifted by using social media’s power to educate others on antiracist ideologies. Specifically, in the use of podcasts, a simple yet effective method in teaching new concepts in an accessible way. While this method is not without its faults, it's a great first step to encourage the stop of prejudice and ignorance against the BLM movement.
