ISBE Transitional Math Curriculum: STEM Pathway
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) will be creating Transitional Math STEM Pathway Curriculum for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to share throughout high schools across the state. The Transitional Math program was created for students who were likely to matriculate to a community college to have a 4th year of high school math that will connect to the real world math needed for their future career. There are three distinct Transitional Math Pathways: STEM, Quantitative Literacy/Statistics, and Technical Math. Students who complete an approved Transitional Math Pathway course at the high school level will not be required to take a math placement test at the community college and will be able to begin in a minimum of a 100 level math course. The Quantitative Literacy/Statistics Pathway and the Technical Math Pathway curricula have already been completed by another working group. The project will focus only on the STEM Pathway curriculum.
The STEM pathway consists of 6 Units, focused primarily on real-life applications for functions:
- Unit 1 - Linear Functions
- Unit 2 - Polynomials
- Unit 3 - Rational Functions
- Unit 4 - Radical Functions
- Unit 5 - Exponential Functions
- Unit 6 - Capstone project
Leadership: Angela Rowley, IMSA Director of State and Federal Educator Outreach
