MCB Mental Health Posters

Assignment for Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), taught by Sarah O'Leary Driscoll

As we’ve discussed with a few specific topics, there is evidence that there is at least partial cause of mental conditions attributed to biology, physiology, and genetics. While the story of how our genes influence our mental health is complicated and still being studied, connections are being made to help identify risk factors and improve the effectiveness of treatments.

You will chose one condition with your partner, and create a poster that covers the following:

  • Statistics (how common, what age range, differences geographically, change over time)
  • Symptoms
  • Biological connection (genes, regulators, epigenetics, pathways, hormone systems, etc)
  • Other Risk factors
  • Treatment options (and how they work)

Your poster should be informative and easy to read, with appropriate biology related figures- be sure to cite these. You should also have in text citations (endnote style is ok) and works cited section (which may be small). Be sure to use reliable sources, which may include journal articles, appropriate news articles, and websites from legitimate biological or psychological/psychiatric associations.

Topics:
Depression
Anxiety
Bipolar Disorder
Dementia
ADHD
Schizophrenia
Personality Disorders (other)
OCD
PTSD
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Bulimia nervosa
Anorexia nervosa
