Abstract

The USA is currently facing its largest illicit drug consumption crisis among younger generations. Additionally, high-intensity drinking is currently at historically high levels prompting diverse prevention efforts. Research has revealed disparities in substance use behaviors and disorders by sex and ethnicity, yet few studies have examined intersectionality of these factors. A better understanding of how biological (sex) and environmental/societal (race, ethnicity) factors interact to influence substance use is necessary to develop effective targeted interventions. In this study, we utilized publicly available data from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (SAMHSA, 2023) to examine sex differences in alcohol use behaviors and disorders by race and ethnicity. We also examined demographic variation in perceived stigma as a potential mediator of differences in drinking and AUD. Analyses revealed significant differences in drinking and AUD across demographic groups (ps
