Abstract
Food waste is an ever-worsening situation across the globe; in the US, food waste takes up 30-40 percent of the country’s food supply. Consequently, food waste comes with an array of problems on a large-scale level, from negatively impacting the environment to increasing the government spending budget. Especially since the United Nations has identified responsible production as a Sustainable Development Goal, we’ve set out to address this problem on a local level to inspire community action. Due to this, it is important to further encourage schools and their students in opting for a more sustainable lifestyle and form habits to last a lifetime. Nature Saver is a program that does this by supporting schools, providing materials for categorizing, and actively educating students about its benefits. The composted waste would be able to be used on school grounds, which Nature Saver can help set up with a fee. The produce the cafeteria produces then can be used in meal preparation, promoting nutrition and sustainable, responsible consumption means working at both ends, and what happens with waste is a part of the process Nature Saver focuses on, with the ultimate goal of raising awareness and sparking action in schools.
