Abstract
Kompost Solutions is an environmentally-centered business that focuses on turning food scraps into useful composting material that “subscribers” can personally use to garden. According to a USDA funded study, “American consumers waste about one pound of food per day”. In Sodexo, our school cafeteria, we were appalled by the mountain of food waste protruding from the trash can. Struck by the rampant food waste in our cafeteria and community, we knew we had to resolve this problem. Aligning with SDG goal 11 to promote sustainable cities and communities, we thought that it would be a great idea to return something back to the environment through composting. Our MVP is taking the scraps available after Sodexo meal times and from local homes and businesses who pay a weekly fee. Kompost Solutions would use an outdoor Bokashi Bin like system along with the common open-air composting methods with the food scraps collected. We would then return the scraps to them as compost, and any surplus will be used for recreational purposes. Marketing towards environmentally-minded consumers near the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, we ensure an in-depth understanding of our consumers, as they are more likely to adopt sustainable practices such as reducing their carbon footprint through composting. By keeping the target audience nearby, we keep channeling costs low, thereby guaranteeing to put forth premium compost to our consumers. To make things even more stream-lined, we plan on producing sealed bins specifically for food scraps in high traffic areas, including our local cafeteria, Sodexo. This will also act as an addition to the sorted trash bins all around the school.
