Abstract

More than 22 million pieces of plastic enter the Great Lakes every year. This is mainly due to the lack of recycling from within the Great Lakes community. Our company, The UnPlastic Association (UPA), aims to deliver a product to clean up current pollution and to educate people about water pollution and how to prevent it. Plastic that has been thrown away instead of recycled causes there to be a large amount of plastic pollution in the Great Lakes. At UPA, we plan to educate others using our website about what they can do to clean this plastic and start recycling. Our education plan would include classroom visits and learning opportunities about UN-SGD goal #6, clean water and sanitation. The clean water and sanitation goal aims to keep water healthy for consumption and pollution free. We also plan to launch our own product, the UPA Filter. This filter will easily cling to the side of your watercraft, collecting plastics as you ride around your lake. Using inspiration from the company YUNA in the mediterranean, we have designed our filter to be lightweight, inexpensive, and portable. All of our products will be made using recycled materials, and all our profits from the UPA filter will go back into providing education. By showing a variety of models in order to gain feedback, we will be able to make the most appealing model for our target audience, the boaters in the Great Lakes region. This project will help by becoming one piece in a much larger puzzle concerning water pollution education, prevention, and reduction.
