Abstract

With the recent rise of policy brutality and hate crimes towards African Americans and marginalized groups across the US, fear and doubts of our justice systems have increased in these communities. Many of them have heard the same narrative from the police when they justify their actions without being aware of the negative impact this has on the people affected. The project Impact Over Intent aims to educate police officers and community members about the harmful impact the claims police officers put forth to justify their intentions during accusations of police brutality or hate crime have on the marginalized population, and point out more effective ways to interact with a person of this population, so these tragedies could be avoided in the future. We plan on creating workshops and contacting local police districts around Illinois who are interested in learning about this topic and bringing together marginalized groups to teach them about their rights and how to properly deal with police officers. This way communities will feel much at ease and marginalized groups would feel like justice is being served in their case.
