Abstract

We found inspiration for this project through the recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation decreed in various states. In Illinois, the current Board of Education’s mandates on LGBTQ+ educational curriculum are very limited and not enforced in public schools, which we as students have personally experienced and witnessed. This inspired us to explore a legislative activism avenue for our project where we intend to create a mandate or executive order that requires schools to teach LGBTQ+ history and topics. As an incentive to carry out the mandates, we plan to grant additional funding to schools that require the enrichment of these topics. We will draft a bill mandating LGBTQ+ education in public or government-funded schools to accomplish our goal , including new teaching standards that primarily focus on specific historical LGBTQ+ content. We will consult with local and state representatives to give our bill the greatest chance of success. The objective and end goal of this project is a drafted bill that exceeds the intentions of the current legislation amendments and is potentially reviewed by several state government officials. As part of our project presentation, we will incorporate a creative spoken word performance that expresses our own experiences and identities followed by the presentation of our work with the legislation. Our foreseeable long-term plans are to communicate with Illinois Board of Education representatives and eventually enact the bill.
