Abstract
The purpose of our Student Leadership Exchange (SLX) project project is to be able to effectively spread accurate information about Gay Rights, Transgender Rights, LGBTQ+ rights, legistlation surrounding thoses topics, and activism opportunities to support the LGBTQ+ community. We discovered that the best way to reach the age demographic that we are trying to inform, 9-24 year olds, is through the use of social media, specifically Instagram in this case and the use of memes. It's important to inform our generation about the issues that face the LGBTQ+ community because a lot of the issues are underrepresented in the media or misrepresented. This is common in most standard media, for example the news. A lot of stations push a political agenda or have biais of some sort motive behind the news that they deliver. Our goal is to show the truth behind what is being shown on the news.
While our instagram page relies heavily on the use of memes we also supplement the content of a regular news site by also having informational posts that provide accurate information. We also wanted to provide outreach to the community as a mostly LGBTQ+ run page. This outreach involves providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ people as well as community allies. This will hopefully provide a space that is safe for everyone to meet people as well as connect about life experiences. We want to spread love to everyone. Hopefully by spreading that love and connection the world as a whole will get a little more safe for everyone.
Instagram is an effective way to communicate with the younger generation because a majority of teenagers and young adults have a social media presence. Whether that be with a large following on Tik Tok or Instagram or just following their friends on facebook or twitter Social media has become a fundamental part of life now. A majority of teenagers and young adults don’t even watch cable tv or news on the tv. No longer is the time of turning on the news during major events. Now everyone turns to social media. If we can appelle to the views were they are most likely to interact on social media then out outreach will be so much further than any other method.
