Abstract

In American school systems all across the country, there have been significant inequalities regarding the lack of diversity in faculty, racial incidents, and poor treatment of students of color. This project focuses on the necessity for more teachers of color and an increase in awareness of the racism students of color face so that they can have an opportunity to succeed in school. Past research has shown that many students of color have done better in school and have had a higher graduation rate if they had teachers of a similar cultural or ethnic background. However, that is not the case for many schools in America. Furthermore, many teachers have lower expectations for students of color and many have an implicit bias toward them. Thus, our project aims to raise awareness of this issue and hopefully increase the number of teachers of color through this. We will do this by creating a monthly newspaper that will entail recent racial incidents in schools in America, student's experience with racism, how many teacher of color there are, and why it is important to advocate for yourself. Ultimately, this newspaper and project's goal is to make American school systems more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
