Abstract
The goal of our student leadership exchange is to spread awareness about the importance of gender equity within educational settings. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, that connects to this is Quality Education and Gender Equality. Ever since the early stages of education, girls have been taught that they are less intelligent than boys. These kinds of lessons have been instilled into these girls since elementary school, and these lessons further become instilled later in education, notably high school.
In our SLX project, we hope to address these disparities. IMSA offers a multitude of high-level STEM classes, but there is a stark difference in the number of females and males in the class. For example, IMSA has a notoriously difficult class called Modern Physics. The demographics of this class are extremely lopsided.
The main goal of our SLX projects is to inform the IMSa community about the gender issues within the education system. A student struggling with these issues, can and will affect their future endeavors. We need more people to know about these instilled lessons on gender, and work on dismantling these prejudices from an early age. These prejudices will alter future decisions and, at the end of the day, make girls feel like they’re less smart or capable simply because of their gender.
