Abstract

TERRA Chicagoland is a volunteer initiative that aims to educate and encourage people to reduce plastic usage. It is an organization that partners with Chicagoland schools and businesses to advocate for plastic pollution. The goal of TERRA Chicagoland is ACE: Advoaction, Collaboration, and Education.

Advocation- TERRA Chicagoland works in tandem with local businesses, schools, and restaurants to advocate for the reduction of single-use plastic use. The most commonly discarded plastics are single-use plastics such as straws, plastic bags, and plastic utensils. Many institutions in the Chicago suburbs use single plastics. Through advocating for businesses to shift to more sustainable alternatives, TERRA Chicagoland aims to make an impact on the waste that Chicagoland produces.

Collaboration- Similar to how TERRA Chicagoland reaches out to schools and businesses, TERRA collaborates with multiple groups and organizations to help spread awareness towards the harmful effects of single use plastics. TERRA features several environmentally-friendly businesses and organizations to support the reduction of plastic in the community. Through the featured volunteer organizations on the website, individuals can take action to reduce the amount of pollution in the local area, such as signing up to clean up Aurora’s community parks and the Fox River. Local residents are directed to other groups that will allow them to make environmentally aware actions and directly participate in the clean up of pollution.

Education - It’s estimated that 8 million pieces of plastic are making their way into oceans every day. In addition, 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year in the United States alone. This plastic can have many negative impacts on the environment such as harming and killing many marine animals, and potentially affecting humans too. Through educating about this severe issue, TERRA Chicagoland plans to encourage individuals to reduce their plastic usage.
