Abstract

Sexual and reproductive rights revolve around individuals being able to make a choice about their own reproductive health. Abortion, the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, is a controversial topic that has been the subject of debate for decades. Arguments surrounding these disputes are not limited to discussions about abortions but also ethical and political ones. They introduce crucial conversations about bodily autonomy, marginalized communities, the privacy of today’s youth, and the misogyny woven within these restrictions.

There are two leading sides to this conflict: pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice supporters advocate for the right to choose whether or not to have an abortion, as it revolves around bodily autonomy. Pro-life supporters believe that the termination of a fetus is morally wrong and oppose abortion, as it involves ending the life of an unborn child. This project aims to explore the historical change of abortion in America as well as the importance of abortion activism in ensuring reproductive rights for everyone. The objective of our Student Leadership Exchange (SLX) is to introduce a bill called the Youth Access to Reproductive Rights. The Youth Access to Reproductive Rights Bill provides pregnant minors with access to safe and legal abortion care without requiring parental/guardian involvement or consent. The bill includes provisions to protect minors from discrimination and establish procedures in cases where a minor is unable or unwilling to obtain parental or guardian consent for an abortion. These policies would require the minor to talk to a qualified healthcare provider about the essential information, so they can make an educated decision. The bill also mandates healthcare providers to provide confidential and non-judgmental counseling and abortion care services to minors and inform them of their right to seek an abortion without parental involvement or consent. This bill will enforce proper education and procedures, so minors may be informed about their rights and possible paths they can take. It is imperative that the government takes the necessary measures to protect and enlighten America’s youth; this bill will not only ensure minors are educated about their right to healthcare, but it will also save the lives of thousands.
