Abstract

Reverse racism or college equity? Affirmative Action in higher education, policies to include particular groups based on their gender, race, and other factors when such groups are underrepresented, has had a long and controversial history in America. Opponents point to the higher SAT scores and GPA of white and Asian-American students as evidence of discrimination, while others say these gaps are a result of racial disadvantages and discrimination, particularly the higher rates of poverty for black and Latino students. As a result, it might be tempting to suggest Affirmative Action plans that only take into consideration income, rather than race, which could benefit the underprivileged of all ethnicities. Even controlling for wealth, however, racial gaps still persist, starting before Kindergarten and widening as students advance through the education system. The purpose of our study is to investigate causes of this gap and potential solutions.
