Abstract

Our SLX project is focused on reducing the possibility of accidents and while improving the usability of power strips. We will achieve this by making a new product with better insulation and more high quality material to reduce the degradation of the cords and adding coiled wires and tubing between outlets to improve the usability. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 17,700 fires were reported to be due to electrical distribution equipment from 2017-2019. Power strips contribute to this problem as they may often have “undersized, cracked or corroded wiring, and/or misaligned plugs” increasing the risk of fires and injury. Our power cords are made to be much more durable with each product going through an intense testing procedure. This way there would be no natural degrading of the cords leading to fire hazards or any accidents. Some power outlets unfortunately provide too little space while some power bricks will take up too much space, leading to some of the outlets not being used. This can stack up with a lot of space being lost because the outlets are rigid and cannot be spaced out. For example, power outlets are on average 2 inches apart from center to center while the dimensions for a mac charger are 2.9 x 2.9 x 1.1 inches. This means that if an outlet is facing towards another outlet that unfortunately it will be blocked. Our Extendo Cord gives the user flexibility by adding coiled wires and tubing between outlets, allowing for said outlets to be manipulated. This can be people who are in offices and need multiple power outlets for their power hungry devices, such as PCs, chargers, printers, and other office supplies which often have massive power adapters. Students, like us, who need outlets for multiple power consuming devices also need these. These include laptop chargers, phone chargers, monitors, lamps, etc.
