Abstract
Carbon dioxide emissions are on the rise; in fact, there has been a 67% increase of global CO2 emissions since 1990. Why does this matter? Well, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning that it directly contributes to the greenhouse effect, which is responsible for trapping heat within the earth’s atmosphere. It’s clear that something needs to be done about this to preserve the earth for future generations. Our solution, TerraCapture, addresses this problem through carbon capture technology, using an artificial photosynthesis reaction to intake carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. CO2 gathered from artificial carbon capture trees will be converted to clean energy through direct air capture, which involves the use of sorbent materials, such as amine-functionalized resins, that selectively capture carbon dioxide from the air. The captured CO2 can be converted into a stable form, such as calcium carbonate, which can be stored underground for long periods of time, effectively removing CO2 from the atmosphere and mitigating the effects of climate change. TerraCapture will mainly target urban areas and industrial spaces, which are impacted the most through global emissions. Overall, our solution will be a game changer, effectively fighting against climate change.
