Abstract
For many people, shoe laces do not cause any struggles. There is a minority of people however who struggle with them every day. Our lead project focuses on reducing the struggles of constantly tying shoelaces for people with disabilities like developmental coordination disorder (like me), as well as flat feet and other causes of difficulty creating quality knots, or unusual waking patterns that lead to shoes becoming untied. People who suffer from D.C.D. can experience difficulty with or delay in developing gross motor (physical) skills, poor body awareness, and appear clumsy or awkward in movements. These symptoms combine to make the simple task of tying a shoe difficult every time, as well as increasing the chances of accidentally untying their shoelace. Our product will utilize the increased surface area and diameter of laces after the knot is tied, allowing the knot to become tightly sealed and less likely to unravel, as well as causing the laces to become elevated off the ground, decreasing the chances of the lace becoming pulled by the other foot while walking. The ability of people with these disorders to wear shoes with laces, allowing them to appear more professional than slides or Velcro, without the disadvantages of having to constantly retie them, or undergo the safety risks caused by having loose shoelaces. We will gain funding for our product through a campaign that raises awareness for D.C.D., with fundraisers supporting groups who help children who suffer from this disorder, as well as some funding going to our project.
