Abstract

The UN SDG goals are sustainability categories that the UN focuses on to improve the world. One of the UN SDG goals that the United States should focus on is the reduced inequalities goal, a goal focusing on reducing the gaps between socioeconomic groups throughout the world. In the annual “Best Countries Report” conducted by US News, World Report, BAV Group, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the United States ranked first in education as of 2023. A well-developed education system, university attendance, and providing top-quality education were all looked at. However, despite this high ranking, The United States couldn’t rank in the top 20 countries with best-averaging math and science scores in 2018, and they failed to rank in the top 10 countries with best-averaging math, science, and reading exams. The public has pointed out that this may be because government spending on education hasn’t kept up with the increasing inflation in the country. (World Population) According to the American Psychological Association, research shows that students from low socioeconomic status (SES) households tend to perform worse academically compared to those from high SES households. The resources of the education systems in each socioeconomic area show a difference between the resources and opportunities given in low and high-SES communities. (American Psychological Association) To close this economic and educational gap across the United States, the funding of the education system within the country should be paid better attention to, and an online website that teaches and assesses the Illinois curriculum so that everyone has the same base resources. In 2015, the Federal Education Department reported that the funding gap between rich and poor schools grew 44% over a decade. In 2019, this funding gap was reported to have increased again. (Barshay) The Report on the Condition of Education 2021 released by the Institute of Education Sciences noted that to be a 25 to 34-year-old with a steady job and income, it was 59% higher with a higher degree than the equivalent of a high school diploma. (Institute of Education Sciences) The United States government should investigate a better education funding distribution system and a base Illinois curriculum website focusing on helping students find their passions so that they have something to go off of before heading into the adult world. Starting with equal academic opportunities could, in turn, raise academic quality across the country, and will allow for the government to track where, and the amount of, funding is needed, and adapt to those needs.
