Abstract
As of today less than 19% of children in the U.S. achieve the recommended one hour of physical activity per day? Members of the younger generations are not getting outside, and a byproduct of this is that many children are not getting enough exercise per day. As a result of this, obesity rates are increasing and a variety of health issues that are associated with a lack of fitness. This can be seen with the COVID-19 pandemic1*mic causing a 2% increase in obesity rates of American children, or roughly 1 million children. As a solution for this, we created the Student Recreation Equity and Wellness Act which advocates for more funds to go to student recreation centers, to encourage students to engage in physical activities that promote wellness, equity, and community bonding. This bill acknowledges the increasing value placed on overall health and wellbeing, hence advocating for more recreational centers to be established. This bill, therefore, encourages students to engage in activities that promote wellness, thus creating a more connected and healthy student body, while addressing inequality in access to wellness opportunities. This bill promotes recreation centers to be more than just places for activity, but rather places for students to feel supported and a key part of a community. This overwhelming lack of exercise in the young generation is addressed with this bill correlating to USNDG goal 3, Good Health and Wellbeing as we aim for this solution to be implemented across different counties.
