Abstract

This proposal called “Local Impact” Bill introduces a local community service requirement for all Illinois high school students to complete 60 hours of nearby work in order to graduate. Although IMSA has already implemented internal and external service hour requirements for graduation, this specifically targets the broader Illinois public school system, where these opportunities are not always structured or required. This also elaborates on IMSA’s program by emphasizing a more community-centered approach, encouraging students to make a difference on a smaller scale, and allowing them to see the change they wish to create. In particular, this proposal encourages students to complete service within their own local area, allowing them to directly see and understand the impact of their contributions. This localized focus makes the experience more meaningful by connecting students to the needs and changes within the communities they actually live in. The goal is to ensure that all students gain hands-on experience that ties their education to real-world community challenges. This aligns with UNSDG goals 4 and 10; quality education and reducing inequalities. Overall, this requirement promotes civic responsibility while helping students become more engaged and passionate about improving their own communities.
