Abstract

Climate change is a huge issue and it affects multiple generations. It is our job to educate everyone about potential solutions to this issue that we are facing as a world. Therefore, we propose a bill to be passed in which two actions are the result of. The first being increased mainstream knowledge about nuclear energy and nuclear power plants across the state of Illinois. While there are bills to advance nuclear power we aim to increase education in the safe use of nuclear energy, in schools across Illinois from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Our first action aligns with United Nation’s Sustainable Development goals four and nine. The reason these follow the United States Sustainable Development goals is to increase quality education throughout the state, and understanding of new, safe nuclear technology to support resilient infrastructure. The second being implements funds for nuclear power plants across the state of Illinois. In order to do this older plants can be updated with newer technology. As well as to  build newer, safer facilities. Our second action would align with United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals seven and 13, for Affordable and Clean Energy as well as Climate Change. Safe nuclear power has the potential to be a reliable, zero carbon energy source that can help lead residents of Illinois to transition further away from fossil fuels. Illinois is the state with the most nuclear power plants within the United States. Therefore, we should update the existing plants, so they can become more efficient and produce more power. While a lot of government within Illinois is one board with nuclear energy, our bill primarily focuses on the educational aspect of safe nuclear energy. We wish to focus on this aspect to take care of the fears that a majority of the population has with nuclear energy and plants.
