Abstract
Waste watch is designed to be a sophisticated all-in-one digital app that bridges the gap between personal nutrition and global sustainability. At its very center Waste Watch serves as an intelligent command center based around the modern kitchen. It utilizes advanced scanning technology to help alleviate some of the problems that occur in grocery management. By simply scanning your refrigerator or pantry, users can instantly catalog the entire inventory of their kitchen. The app's backend meticulously tracks every ingredient logging how much of the ingredient there is and most importantly, it monitors the expiration date based on several factors to ensure accuracy. This approach transforms the forgotten items at the back of your fridge and pantry into the main ingredients, sending timely alerts to ensure that all ingredients are used when they are most fresh ensuring that no food is thrown away due to expiring.
Beyond mere inventory tracking, Waste Watch functions as a personalized culinary consultant that adapts to the ingredients that you already have. The app uses its database of your available ingredients to generate dynamic recipe suggestions, effectively solving the daily problem of trying to plan what to make for dinner while simultaneously preventing unnecessary trips to the store. Each suggested meal is integrated with nutritional data which allows users to align their eating habits with specific health goals or dietary requirements. By focusing on recipes that include food that can go bad before others, the app ensures that the transition from pantry to plate is both seamless and nutritionally optimized.
What sets Waste Watch apart is our goal of gamification. We plan to incorporate a leaderboard into our app where users earn XP for every item successfully used before it expires and complete zero waste streaks. This data is then fed into a global leaderboard where you can track your progress against your friends and other everyday people across the globe. By visualizing the collective environmental impact and rewarding consistency, Waste Watch transforms the concept of sustainability into a tangible engaging game. This ensures that users stay motivated to build better habits that benefit both them and the planet.
