Abstract

The UN Sustainable Development Goal that we chose was Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. This goal aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” Physical activity is extremely crucial when it comes to maintaining one’s health, as it has been statistically proven to increase levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which regulate one’s mood and brings about self-esteem and perseverance. Since many students have been hit hard by the pandemic, prioritizing fitness would bring more positivity in students’ lives and increase their mental health. However, many students do not currently have access to a public gym or exercise equipment, as a fitness center would normally be available to them if they were on campus. Because of this, students are not as motivated to workout or keep themselves fit.

To address this common problem, we have developed Fitness Favors, a project that provides our audience of diverse IMSA students with a very convenient, compact, and portable exercise kit. This kit is super compact and would be effective for an IMSA dorm. After the pandemic ends, this could be a great tool to help students at IMSA get back into the shape that they desire and indulge in exercises to bring about positivity and motivation. Moreover, the effects of Fitness Favor go even beyond the pandemic. When back on campus, some students may have safety concerns about accessing IMSA’s public gym, while also being unable to leave campus regularly to go to a gym. Fitness Favors would provide those who crave for workout equipment with a means for this. Fitness Favors also eliminates the anxiety that some students have about working out in front of other people, as it can be done inside the comfort of your dorm.
