Abstract
Almost 91% of all plastic water bottles are not recycled (Gitnux, 2022). The increase in plastic water bottle consumption makes action necessary. Single-use plastics are detrimental to the environment and harmful to animals and humans. To achieve change, we will shift our focus from consumers and work towards the 12th United Nations goal of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns (United Nations, 2024). We propose a plastic container deposit law in Illinois, where whenever consumers purchase a single-use plastic container, they would get charged an additional deposit that would be paid back upon returning the container to a recycling center. This would significantly increase the recycling rate of the state, causing the amount of plastic waste produced to plummet, as seen in the results from US states that use this.
