Abstract

For our project, we have decided to research goal number 14: Life Below Water. Our project aims to examine the effect of industrial fishing on various marine species. Around 75% of fish caught are done so industrially, and this practice takes up more than half of the entire ocean. The issue at hand is that industrial fishing causes significant changes in populations of marine organisms, also affecting the ecosystem and biodiversity of marine life. Overfishing arises when fishing efforts surpass the natural reproduction rates of fish populations, resulting in significant declines in species abundance and diversity. To address the problem, we propose that sustainable fishing is implemented in areas that may not prioritize this, marine areas are protected, and imposing restrictions on fishing endangered species.
